Daughters of the American Revolution: Roman Holiday

Daughters of the American Revolution: Roman Holiday

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has always been dedicated to preserving American history. In its quest to honor those who provided essential support to the American Revolutionary War, 130 members embarked on an unforgettable journey to Rome, Italy last fall.

The President’s Vision

Every three years, a new President General is elected to the highest office of the Society by the DAR Continental Congress. Each President General carries forward her vision and goals for the National Society, including international travel. Our challenge was to curate a memorable and immersive experience, in line with the President General’s interests and priorities, that paid tribute to the men and women outside the US who provided support to the fight for America’s freedom in the 18th century

Creating an Unforgettable Experience

By leveraging the expertise and networks of the DAR’s President General, we crafted an itinerary that went beyond the ordinary. The journey through Rome included a once-in-a-lifetime audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican and an exclusive after-hours tour of the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel. These extraordinary opportunities provided a rich experience learning about Rome’s ancient history and put our nearly 250 years of American history in perspective.

Cultivating Friendship and Collaboration

While in Rome, the DAR members had the privilege of meeting Jack Markell, the US Ambassador to Italy, at a special reception. The group also joined local dignitaries outside of Florence for a special wreath-laying ceremony at Cimitero Suburbano, site of the final resting place of Filippo Mazzei, friend to Thomas Jefferson and a major contributor to the Revolutionary War effort. This interaction fostered a sense of camaraderie, reinforced the ties of friendship between nations, and honored historical connections.

Achieving Meaningful Results

This trip to Italy was not just a vacation, but an opportunity for growth, discovery, and reaffirming the shared history between nations. The journey fostered connections, deepened knowledge, and left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who participated. With a passion for inspiring curiosity and a sense of adventure, we continue to provide transformative experiences that empower individuals and bring history to life.
