New Creative Collaborations We are delighted to announce two new partnerships that recently launched: American Girl Vacations debuted on June 25. Creating innovative family travel experiences through the lens of American Girl’s courageous characters had been on the drawing board at ATA for several years. We have long admired the brand’s values, authenticity, and commitment to historical accuracy. Chef Edward Lee’s Kentucky Bourbon Experience came together one night over dinner, when Senior Program Manager Samantha Barrie described to Lee and his wife Dianne how chefs could tell their own stories, share their passion for food and culture, and amplify their philanthropic mission by leading unique travel experiences. Samantha worked with Chef Lee to curate an itinerary full of special access and behind-the-scenes experiences that will delight Bourbon lovers. Increasing Racial Representation on Future Programs In the months following the release of the company’s Anti-Racism Action Plan, our teams took action to improve racial representation throughout the travel experiences we are creating. Our Zagat New Orleans program spends a full day exploring Treme, home to free people of color before the Civil War, as well as the history of Black-owned restaurants in the city. The day’s highlight is a private lunch at Dooky Chase’s, a meeting place for big names in music and entertainment, Civil Rights, and culture since 1941. Our Guest Services team is improving our pre-departure resources by applying an anti-racism lens and ensuring that all stories and voices of the local community are reflected. For example, we have revised our background materials on New Orleans to incorporate its Native American history and highlight all local food traditions equally, including Creole, Cajun and Soul Food in our culinary descriptions. ATA’s Vaccine Requirement Last month’s CDC’s guidance that fully vaccinated people can now travel domestically and internationally, followed by EU countries re-opening to vaccinated Americans, was the news we have been waiting for! Therefore, we decided that for the safety of our groups and the communities we visit, as well as for a more relaxed travel experience, we will be requiring proof of vaccination on our departures for anyone 12 years old and older, including our Experts, Tour Managers, and Local Staff. We anticipate that validation of vaccination will be a requirement for entry into most international destinations as borders re-open. We’re Returning to the Office! After Labor Day, DC area staff will return to our downtown office. Many of you have seen our office in the heart of the city, projecting a 1904 façade on to Connecticut Avenue, just south of Dupont Circle. We designed the space with collaboration, reflection, and light in mind, from our “soft space” living room to our sun-filled café and our glass walls along the M Street side. We have learned in the past year that we are experts at virtual work and can navigate all the technical challenges of being remote. However, what we have missed are the face-to-face interactions, the collaborative idea-sharing, the osmosis of learning that can only occur when we are physically close. This is why we are excited to return to the office. This time, our employees have the added freedom to work from home up to twice a week. Different teams are coordinating their overlap with their colleagues and other groups to maximize collaborative time and reconnect. As we revive from this pandemic, it is all the more important for us to carry forth the lessons that we have learned; to work closely together; to help new members of our team integrate; to immerse ourselves in the culture and ties that have won us two Top Workplace awards; to support our city as it revives; and to build an ever brighter future. We’re back, DC!
Press Release: ATA Partners with American Girl
Company Release Academic Travel Abroad and American Girl Create New Family-Friendly, Experiential Vacation Packages Curated trips bring the worlds of popular American Girl historical characters to life for fans Washington, DC (June 25, 2021) – Today, educational travel provider Academic Travel Abroad and American Girl®, the beloved brand known for helping girls grow up with confidence and character, launched a new immersive travel program, American Girl Vacations™. Designed for American Girl fans and their families, the first two vacation packages are inspired by two of the brand’s iconic historical characters: Nanea Mitchell, a Hawaiian girl growing up during wartime in 1941; and Rebecca Rubin, a Jewish American girl growing up during the peak of the immigration period in 1914. The fully-guided educational trips will take place in December 2021 and explore the islands of Oahu, Hawaii, and Manhattan, New York. Each vacation package features curated events and activities that bring the American Girl character stories to life in a culturally authentic and unique way. “American Girl has spent decades creating fun, immersive experiences for millions of girls and their families to enjoy,” said Julie Freeland, Senior Director, Global Live Events for Mattel. “Now, by combining the wonder of travel with the magic of storytelling, American Girl Vacations gives fans a whole new way to experience the world of the brand’s beloved characters and create memories to last a lifetime.” Hawaiian Holiday with Nanea™ (December 26, 2021 – January 1, 2022) traces the story of compassionate and courageous Nanea Mitchell in beautiful Oahu, Hawaii, as she and her family watched their world turn upside down after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. In addition to a private tour of the USS Arizona Memorial in Honolulu, girls and their families will explore the breadth of Oahu—from the shores of Waikiki Beach to the verdant mountains of the Kualoa Ranch. During the seven-day adventure, girls can walk in Nanea’s footsteps by learning the art of hula dancing, creating lei necklaces, and attending a traditional luau created just for them. See the full Hawaiian Holiday with Nanea™ itinerary and reservations here. Lights! Camera! Action! Rebecca’s™ New York (December 26-31, 2021) follows confident and charismatic Rebecca Rubin, a young girl growing up in New York City in 1914 who dreams of becoming an actress. During six days in Manhattan, girls and their families will immerse themselves in Rebecca’s New York by re-imagining the culture and traditions of her Jewish immigrant experience on the Lower East Side—the gateway for many who arrived to the U.S. in the late 19th century. In addition to several museum tours, fans will explore the world of stage through a private acting class, including a chance to make a silent film; take a sewing class while learning about mitzvah or doing good deeds; and enjoy some of the city’s most exciting holiday treats and activities. See the full Rebecca’s™ New York itinerary and reservations here. “Travel is a life-changing experience for young people, and we have woven American Girl’s core values of kindness, tolerance, confidence and resilience into these trips,” said Chase Poffenberger, ATA Executive Vice President and a mother of two daughters. Dinner with Friends Abroad Restauranteur Nancy Silverton, Critic and Author Ruth Reichl, and Food Journalist/Editor Laurie Ochoa join forces this fall to host Dinner with Friends Abroad, an Italian food lover’s dream come true. This trip sold out in less than a day and has a long wait list! Clearly the experiential and affinity markets are poised to recover quickly! Time to Hit the Road Again? Vaccinations are happening at a rapid pace of 2.6 million doses a day in the U.S., many administered to citizens over 65. Travel bookings are flowing into tour operators and travel agencies, with eager soon-to-be-mostly immune customers ready to hit the road. In mid-March, news emerged that airports had seen the largest travel day since the beginning of the pandemic. At the time of this writing, 1.5 million passengers were processed by TSA (updated statistics are available here), up from 548,132 in 2020 and down from 2.2 million on the same day in 2019. A recent poll conducted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) captured data from 4,700 individuals who had taken a plane trip in the past 11 months. Responses point to a fall recovery, with some willing to board a plane when the vaccine has taken effect. 57% expect to be travelling within two months of the pandemic being contained (49% in Sept 2020). 72% want to travel to see family and friends as soon as Covid is contained (63% in Sept 2020). 81% will be more likely to travel once they are vaccinated. 84% will not travel if there is a chance of quarantine at destination (83% in Sept2020). 56% will postpone travel until the economy stabilizes (65% in Sept 2020). Our own Executive Vice President, Chase Poffenberger, and Chair of NTA, our trade association, will be heading to Memphis in early May for the annual tour operator meeting, “Contact”. Travel is in our blood and is coming back with renewed verve! ATA’s Reimagining Work Continues In our October newsletter, we told you about some of the ways we’ve pivoted toward promising future possibilities and new audiences. One example is our gap year portfolio. Our study abroad division, CET Academic Programs, has seen increased interest in gap years recently, and we’ve responded with an expanded and updated portfolio of programs. In addition to our intensive language gap programs, we now offer internship-based and virtual options. To further augment the experience, we connect our gap students across the world in a weekly virtual seminar where they will engage in discussion and share perspectives, making the impactful experience even more global. Previous Next Has your organization considered virtual options that support and complement your programs in the field? We’d love to talk to you about your plans! In the meantime, if you know a young person considering a gap experience, you can learn more here. Our fall term application deadline is May 1. COVID-19’s Silver Linings A few weeks ago, the commemorations that marked a year since the world went into lockdown were a sobering reminder of the pandemic’s toll on our lives, our families, and our industry. Yet when we asked our colleagues around the world about their “silver linings” from the last 12 months, we were inspired by the ways their stories—both personal and professional—have been forever changed. Read on to hear from them, in their own words.
COVID-19’s Silver Linings
A few weeks ago, the commemorations that marked a year since the world went into lock down were a sobering reminder of the pandemic’s toll on our lives, our families, and our industry. Yet when we asked our colleagues around the world about their “silver linings” from the last 12 months, we were inspired by the ways their stories—both person and professional—have been forever changed. Read on to hear from them, in their own words. On Family Life I have been given the gift of spending every Friday with my 18-month old daughter, using FFCRA leave. I will treasure that time for the rest of my life—Meredith Akery, New Jersey Because we’re all at home more, my kids’ Japanese is better than ever from hearing us speak it at home together. —Kate Maruyama, Maryland I’ve loved eating lunch at home with my family most days. I’m aware this is a unique “of-the-moment” opportunity, and I’m so grateful for it.—Mark Lenhart, Washington DC I was able to spend an entire school year side-by-side with my virtual high schooler. He’ll be out of the house for good in a couple years, and I know I’ll look back fondly on this crazy time we’ve spent together. —Kate Desvenain, Virginia My son learned to walk and it was a moment that my husband and I were both able to enjoy together as a family. —Brooke Masterson, Maryland I got engaged at the National Cathedral! And even though this wasn’t an unexpected new chapter to my relationship, being together so much (so much!) has added a depth to our connection that I am thankful for. —Tess Cannon, DC On New Personal Pursuits We are normally international travelers, so our house rental on Lake Erie was just about the polar opposite of what we’re used to. It was WONDERFUL, felt as much “away” as going abroad, and reminded us about the importance of just being together. —Vanessa Sterling, Pennsylvania Our neighborhood came together in inspiring ways – with curbside concerts, home food deliveries, art projects, and scavenger hunts. While my world “shrunk” during the past year, parts of it also became richer. —Jennifer Kefer, Maryland Being furloughed allowed me more time to read than I’ve had in a long time. —Allison Rottman, China As a tribute to my maternal grandmother, I decided to enroll in a CET Customized Language Training Chinese course and read her short stories and interviews in Chinese. I’ve carved out time twice per week to focus on my language skills, which has helped my mental health when so much of my days are dedicated to childcare and pandemic-related stress; and I’ve gotten to experience a new product that CET created. I think my grandmother would be very proud to know that someone in the family is finally reading her work in the language in which it was written. —Tara Vanacore, DC Spending two months in Italy allowed us to see family, enjoy different treats from the supermarket, order a decent daily cappuccino from the local bar, and work on my lifelong dream: our Italian home. The time difference allowed greater thinking and productive time for work. I started my workday while the DC office slept, had a long break for lunch and exercise, and collaborated with my team in the afternoon and early evening. —Emma Impavido, Italy and DC On Life Lessons My daily mindfulness practice also helps a lot to cope with unavoidable changes which might happen any time. —Nova Shao, China I’ve learned that work life balance isn’t black and white for me. Having defined working hours is important, but the flexibility I value most is being able to weave my life in throughout my day. —Kelley West, Maryland All you need are a few important people in your life to get by. —Tim Baird, DC I learned to decouple my sense of self and worth from my “output” (creative work, paid work, tangible things I put into the world) and get joy and fulfilment from “input” (information, art, conversation, and, yes, binge-watching Netflix). —Malika Watson, Japan The silver lining for us as an organization has been an increased awareness and inclusion of staff outside of our DC office. Now that we’re all remote employees, we are much more inclusive of our on-site staff. —Allegra O’Donoghue, Egypt
2020 Q4 Newsletter
2020 Q4 Newsletter A Special Note About 2021 The first week of 2021 included an historic assault on the U.S. Capitol during a critical certification vote for our Presidential Election. The violence, intolerance, anger and disrespect for American foundational values and democratic systems reinforced how important our work is—to enhance understanding through travel and education. Many who have traveled beyond our shores deeply appreciate the privileges and freedoms we Americans have at home. Hindsight is 2020 It was an extraordinary year! We navigated uncharted territory for our organization, industry, and world. Our resilience was tested and we banded together with partners and colleagues alike to pave a path forward. As is tradition, ATA Executive Vice President, Chase Poffenberger, captured our year in a reflective blog post. Read the full post about both the highs and lows the year brought. We look forward with optimism to the year ahead and building back even stronger. Happy New Year Welcoming New Partners We are delighted to announce several new exclusive ATA partners who will be extending their reach, mission and message with experiential travel programs, beginning in 2021 and 2022. Country Living will be kicking off a new travel program for subscribers with a trip to the Country Living Fair in Nashville. will take the unique blend of the arts, religion, education and recreation programming that happens each summer in upstate New York into the wider world. The Great Courses will be working with ATA on itinerary planning and execution for new travel content. Road and Track has added two international destinations—Japan and Italy—to its new membership travel program called “R & T Experiences.” There are even more new partnerships on the horizon for 2021 that are not quite ready to go public, so stay tuned for our next newsletter Valuable Takeaways from Industry Events Our staff has been Zooming around the globe, albeit not by plane. Another silver lining of the pandemic was that events became more accessible, given their pivot to virtual. Here are highlights from just a few of the industry events we attended last quarter: Tourism Cares’ Virtual Meaningful Travel SummitThis virtual summit showcased Tourism Cares’ evolution as an organization committed to sustainability, with a focus on Colombia, a country that uses social and environmental justice to foster stability and peace. The Black Travel Alliance’s Wavelength Networking EventBlack Travel Content Creators (authors bloggers, broadcasters, journalists, photographers, podcasters, social media influencers, and vloggers) came together to increase their representation and visibility. We were delighted to meet these travel professionals who are guiding us as we seek educational travel partners who serve Black travelers, increase the number of People of Color-owned businesses, vendors, restaurants, hotels, venue, and tour staff we work with within the U.S. and in foreign destinations, and assess potential interest from BTA members in serving as content experts and tour managers on future trips. National Tour Association’s VTREXNTA’s first-ever virtual Travel Exchange demonstrated the resilience of the community of operators, suppliers and DMOs who come together each year at TREX as buyers and sellers. The 1:1 meetings were possibly more effective than in “real life” and the speakers top-notch. Chase Poffenberger, NTA’s current Board Chair, hopes to see members in person next November in Cleveland at TREX ‘21! World Tourism & Travel Council’s “One Voice – to Recovery and Beyond”This summit reinforced an important message: governments, businesses, and the health sector need to work together, both seamlessly and globally, to re-ignite the power of the travel industry. There is much to do, but the groundwork is being laid Doing the Work: Our Progress and Path Towards Social Justice After the election in November, we shared our Anti-Racism Action Plan publicly. The Plan outlines our commitment to putting diversity, equity, and inclusion at the center of everything we do. Since then, with input from our directors and teams, we have committed to concrete 2021 goals to ensure we make progress toward the metrics and loftier 10-year goals we have set for ourselves. We plan to review these formally within the organization and set the following year’s goals every January. We’ve already revised our mission statement to reaffirm our commitment to justice and equality as a central component of our organization
