Mark Lenhart President
Washington, D.C. — January 14, 2026 — We are pleased to announce that Mark Lenhart has been named President of Academic Travel Abroad, effective immediately. Founded 76 years ago in the wake of World War II, Academic Travel Abroad began by taking students to Europe and the Soviet Union—an origin that reflects our longstanding commitment to fostering global understanding through educational travel. Today, that legacy continues as Mark steps into this new role, leading both Academic Travel Abroad and its study abroad division, CET Academic Programs, strengthening alignment across the company.
As part of this leadership evolution, Kate Simpson becomes Chief Executive Officer, focusing on long-term strategy and enterprise stewardship. Kate and Mark, along with Chase Poffenberger, have worked together for well over 30 years and remain the sole owners of ATA, conferring regularly as officers of the organization.

A longtime leader at the company for over three decades, Mark previously served as Executive Director of CET Academic Programs and Senior Vice President of Academic Travel Abroad, roles in which he helped grow CET’s global footprint and strengthen cross-organizational alignment. He also stepped in as Acting President during Kate’s recent sabbatical, a period that underscored his steady, day-to-day leadership of the organization.
